Michael Jackson
14th July 1988, Wembley Stadium, London HA9
Artwork Title: Michael Jackson - Wembley - Roll 11B Frame 33
The hair is doing almost as much work as Michael is in this one.
His head is thrown back, his hair flying and his mouth open as he sings, while most of the frame is empty space. I deliberately like the imbalance of it — Michael is pushed over to the right and the whole left side of the photograph is just light, haze and grain.
After all the carefully constructed choreography of a Michael Jackson concert, this feels much more spontaneous.
The stage lighting has softened everything around him and the movement in his hair gives the photograph a slightly chaotic quality. It is probably the least controlled-looking image in this group, which is exactly why it works.
By this stage of the roll I was concentrating almost entirely on his face and upper body. The earlier photographs had established the costume and the full performance; now I was looking for those smaller physical details.
Sometimes you don't need to see the whole performer.
Sometimes the hair tells you what's happening.
