Michael Jackson
14th July 1988, Wembley Stadium, London HA9
Artwork Title: Michael Jackson - Wembley - Roll 11B Frame 9
On the second roll I’d changed lenses and shooting more pulled in on Michael.
This is almost a portrait rather than a concert photograph. He is looking upwards, his face caught between concentration and effort, while the microphone sits low in the frame and the enormous belt becomes almost as important visually as his face.
There is something quite physical about the picture. The damp hair, the tension in his neck and the expression all suggest how hard he was working on stage, even though the performance itself was so tightly controlled.
Michael was already operating on a scale that most performers could only dream about. Wembley was packed with 72,000 people and this was one of a run of sold-out London shows, but from where I was standing the job remained surprisingly simple: get close, watch carefully and wait for something to happen.
