Here’s Michael Jackson in full 1988 performance mode, from his outfit, resplendent with boxers championship belt, long, curly mullet and pure M.J. vibes.

I was in the photographers' pit at the front of the stage, 72,000 people behind me, close enough to capture this set of images up close and personal.

Here I’ve captured him mid-shout, mid-song, caught in a moment of heart wrenching soul.The grain of the HP5 film, push processed by two stops gives the picture a much harder feel than the polished images that surrounded Michael at the time.

He was one of the most carefully controlled performers in the world, but from the pit the job was still to catch those tiny moments between one gesture and the next.

This one has everything going on at once.
