This contact sheet shows the whole sequence as it happened.

The early frames are relatively sparse because I was conserving film. I was paying for the film and processing myself and still had two more Nirvana shows to photograph over the following couple of days.

Then, around frame 26, everything changes.

Kurt starts smashing the guitar, then the drum kit, and finally throws a pitcher of beer over the amplifier and speaker stack. From that point onwards I shot as much as I could before the band walked off stage.

For me, that's one of the useful things about a contact sheet. It doesn't just show the photographs that survived the edit; it shows the moment when I changed from being careful with the film to photographing whatever was happening in front of me.
