The guitar had already been smashed and Kurt had turned his attention to the drum kit.

In this frame he has picked up a cymbal stand and is using it to attack the drums. From where I was standing at the side of the stage, I could follow what was happening without having to move position, so I just kept shooting.

I'd gone from carefully conserving film to photographing as much as I could. A few minutes earlier I'd been thinking about how much film I could afford to use over the next couple of days. Now there was no point worrying about it.

The cymbal stand had become the weapon of choice.
