26th April 1990 was part of a five-day stretch I spent with Nirvana in New York and New England. I'd photographed the band earlier that day in the East Village and was now standing at the side of the stage at the Pyramid Club for the entire show.

At this point I was still being fairly careful with the film. I was paying for the film and processing myself, and I knew I still had another show to photograph in Amherst the following day and another in Hoboken after that. So I wasn't firing away indiscriminately; I was trying to make every frame count.

Looking at this photograph now, knowing what happened later that night, there is something rather nice about its ordinariness. Kurt is simply playing, and I still had no idea that the economics of shooting the show were about to change rather dramatically.
