Artwork Title: Orbital – 2011 – White Wonky
This was photographed as part of a larger promotional shoot for Orbital's record label, ahead of the release of Wonky, their first new album for eight years and the first since the Hartnoll brothers had reformed in 2008.
The white studio gave us a very simple starting point, and at some stage the idea developed into stretching Paul and Phil's arms to increasingly ridiculous proportions. The result is a photograph that feels slightly surreal without needing much more than a white background, two black outfits and a couple of very accommodating musicians.
I particularly like the contrast between the almost graphic simplicity of the picture and the odd, wonky shapes I created. It seemed appropriate for an album called Wonky, which was itself a return to making new music after a fairly long absence.
Looking back, it's also a nice reminder that promotional shoots don't always need a complicated concept. Sometimes you start with a blank studio, have a bit of a play and something rather strange comes out of it.
