Nirvana

By the summer of 1992 Nirvana had become the biggest band in the world and the mood around them had changed beyond recognition.

I photographed them beside the Monument to Alfonso XII in Madrid's Retiro Park before their concert that evening and while the session never really settled, it produced one of my favourite portraits of the three of them together. Kurt's improvised glasses and well-worn Daniel Johnston T-shirt have become almost as emblematic of this period as the music itself.

Looking back, I remember the atmosphere more than the conversation.

The easy chemistry I'd encountered on an two years earlier with the band had largely disappeared, but sometimes photographs outlast the circumstances in which they were made.

This remains one of my favourite portraits from that afternoon.
