... and then there is Lars.

Caught from below, Mr. Ulrich is all movement and physical effort — standing, one stick raised above the kit, hair flying and mouth wide open shouting along with the music.

The drums dominate the foreground and the low viewpoint makes the whole thing feel slightly out of control, which seems entirely appropriate.

Lars was born in Denmark in 1963 and came from a family of serious tennis players; his father Torben was a nationally renowned player and Lars himself trained with ambitions of following that route before discovering music. A 1973 Deep Purple concert in Copenhagen helped change the direction of his life, and after moving to California he placed an advert in The Recycler looking for musicians. One of the replies came from James Hetfield, and Metallica began there.

By the time I photographed him in Houston he had been at the centre of Metallica for seven years and, alongside Hetfield, was already one of the band's principal songwriters. ...And Justice for All had just taken them into another league, but the live performance still looked remarkably physical and unrestrained.

There is very little elegance to this photograph — and I mean that as a compliment.

It looks like the hard work that playing drums in Metallica is.
