By early 1989 Metallica were already playing arenas, but there was nothing particularly polished about the way they attacked a stage. This is James Hetfield in full flight — guitar angled towards the camera, plectrum clenched in one hand and seemingly shouting at the ceiling.

I love the slightly chaotic perspective of this frame. The guitar fills the foreground, the stage lights flare behind him and everything feels exaggerated by being shot from below. It gives a pretty good idea of what it must have been like to stand in front of Metallica at this point: loud, physical and completely committed.

This was the Damaged Justice tour, just a few months after the release of ...And Justice for All, when Metallica were making the transition from cult thrash-metal band to major arena act. Looking at photographs from this period, though, it's easy to see that the size of the venues hadn't yet diluted the intensity of the band.

They may have been playing arenas, but they still looked like they just came in off the street.
