This has always felt to me like James Hetfield looking every inch the rock'n'roll star. The hair, the leather, the flying V and that completely unrestrained expression all seem to sum up Metallica at this point in their career.

I believe this was taken in Houston on the Damaged Justice tour, a few months after the release of ...And Justice for All. They were already moving into the arena league, but there was still something raw and dangerous about the band that hadn't been polished away by success. Standing in the pit with Metallica at this point, you could feel the sheer physical force of the live show, and this frame captures a little of that.

It was a particularly interesting moment in their history: ...And Justice for All was their first album after the arrival of Jason Newsted and the beginning of their first worldwide headline arena tour. Within two years they would be one of the biggest bands in the world, but here they still look like the band that could tear an arena apart simply by turning up and playing.

And that's probably what I like most about this photograph — James doesn't look like someone pretending to be a rock star. He just looks like one.
