I've always liked contact sheets because they reveal everything that normally stays hidden.

Every slight shift in expression, every adjustment in position and every frame leading up to the photograph that eventually gets chosen.

This roll was photographed for Creation Records as part of an all-day shoot in 1994 that also produced the now well-known photographs of the band at Jodrell Bank.

After we headed there, I used the covered walkway leading to Manchester Airport as a location.

Its clean, curved architecture and strong perspective felt like an interesting contrast to the band and I liked the way the repeating lines naturally drew the eye towards them.

The pink chinagraph mark on frame 33 is my own, identifying the image I selected for printing at the time.

Before digital editing, this was simply part of the process: studying contact sheets with a loupe, marking the chosen frame by hand and sending it off to the darkroom for printing.

Looking at it now, I still enjoy seeing how many tiny decisions and almost identical frames lie behind a single finished photograph.
