Artwork Title: Blur – 1990 – Contact Sheet 22C
Oh so young, photographed around the time of There's No Other Way, when Blur were still being labelled Baggy or Madchester tag-a-longs rather than the band they would soon become.
Shot in my shared studio at B2, Metropolitan Wharf in pre-gentrification Wapping, this sequence feels more like an experiment than a portrait session. Small changes in posture, eyelines and expressions gradually altered the photographs as we searched for something that felt natural rather than posed.
The pink chinagraph mark identifies the frame I eventually chose for printing. It's funny how a contact sheet can preserve not just the photographs but the memory of making them.
