Nick Cave
B2 Metropolitan Wharf, London E1 • March 1990
Artwork Title: Nick Cave - Seated - 1990
A completely different side of the same session.
Nick is sitting down with one hand against his forehead, looking away from the camera and apparently lost in thought. The suit and tie are still there, but the formality has largely disappeared.
I like the fact that this feels less like a conventional portrait. Nothing much is happening, but the gesture of the hand and the way he has folded himself into the chair make the photograph feel as though I've caught him between pictures rather than posing for one.
The contact sheet shows several variations on this pose, with only small changes in his expression and position. This was one of those sequences where the slightest movement made quite a different photograph.
