The second roll is much closer, I’d changed lenses and was shooting more pulled in on Michael.

The sequence starts with broader views but quickly becomes a study of Michael's face, hands, hair and the changing expressions that happen as he moves through the performance. By the time I get to the later frames, there is very little stage left in the photographs at all.

The contact sheet also shows something that is normally invisible once a photograph has been turned into a print: the selection process. You can see the near-identical frames sitting next to one another and, in the middle of the roll, the marked frame 16 that eventually became the photograph with the rather unlikely Kevin Cummins story.

That is one of the reasons I like keeping the contact sheets. They preserve the working process as well as the photographs.

The final prints might look like individual moments.

The contact sheet reminds you that every one of them came from a sequence.
