Michael Jackson
14th July 1988, Wembley Stadium, London HA9
Artwork Title: Michael Jackson - Wembley - Roll 11B Frame 35
And then, right at the end of the sequence, Michael smiles.
After all the intensity of the preceding frames, this feels like a completely different photograph. His head is tilted back, the microphone is close to his mouth and there is a genuine lightness to his expression.
The stage lights behind him become soft circles of light, while the grain of the HP5 gives the whole thing a slightly dreamlike quality.
It is also a good reminder that a concert isn't just a succession of dramatic poses. There are all these tiny changes in expression between the big moments, and sometimes the quiet ones are the photographs that survive.
Looking at the contact sheet, you can see the progression towards this frame. The performance is still happening, but the intensity has eased and suddenly he's smiling.
After photographing him for two rolls, that small change of expression was enough to make me keep shooting.
