This is Michael right in the middle of singing, eyes squeezed shut and face completely engaged with the microphone.

There isn't much room left in the frame, which suits the intensity of the moment. His hair is all over the place, his mouth is open and the expression is anything but the carefully composed public image that surrounded him.

This is what I was looking for from the pit — not necessarily the biggest movement, but the point where the performance became physical.

The microphone is almost central to the picture, but it is his face that carries it. Everything else is costume and light.

Looking at the contact sheet, there are several frames around this sequence, each fractionally different. This one has the expression I wanted: eyes shut, mouth open and completely absorbed in the song.

It is difficult to photograph someone who is so famous that everybody already thinks they know what he looks like.

The trick is finding a moment they haven't already seen a thousand times.
