A raised arm, the microphone in his other hand and that familiar Jackson expression.

The interesting thing is how little of the stage you actually need to see. The white jumpsuit dominates the frame, the black straps break it up graphically and the raised arm takes Michael almost out of the picture altogether.

I was shooting black and white Ilford HP5, pushed two stops in the processing which gave me plenty of latitude for the constantly changing stage lighting but also left a fairly pronounced grain structure in the darker areas and blown out whites.

Looking back at the contact sheet, there are several almost identical moments here, but they aren't really identical at all. A slight change in the position of his head or hand completely alters the photograph.

That was the thing about shooting live music before digital: you could see the moment happening, but you couldn't see the photograph until much later.

You had to trust your timing.
