Artwork Title: Michael Jackson - Wembley - Roll 11A Contact Sheet
The first roll starts with Michael relatively small in the frame and gradually moves in and out around the performance — full-length figures, gestures, raised arms and then tighter variations as I worked the pit.
Contact sheets are where you really see how a concert photograph is made. The finished print gives you one moment; the sheet gives you the dozen or so decisions surrounding it. A hand moves, a head turns, the microphone comes up, the lights change and suddenly one frame is better than the next.
This was Ilford HP5, and the grain and contrast are very much part of the look of the finished photographs.
What I find interesting here is how repetitive the sequence initially appears. Then you start looking closely and realise that almost every frame is different.
That's the reality of live photography: you aren't waiting for one perfect pose.
You're watching for the fraction of a second when everything lines up.
