Michael Jackson
14th July 1988, Wembley Stadium, London HA9
Artwork Title: Michael Jackson - Wembley - Roll 11A Frame 31
By frame 31 on this first roll of 36 I was still working fairly wide, catching Michael almost full length against the stage lights.
Again I’ve caught him mid verse, his familiar features in action towards the ending of ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’, the light behind him turning the background into a haze of white and grain.
I like the slightly accidental feeling of the frame. It isn't a big gesture or one of the obvious Jackson poses. He is simply moving through the performance, caught between one moment and the next.
The contact sheet (you can find it in the M.J. collection on this site) shows how many small variations there were within the show and the frames I shot.
A fraction of a second either way and the balance of the body, hands and face changes completely.
That was the reality of shooting from the pit in those days. You didn't have a screen to check what you'd got.
You just kept shooting and hoped you'd pressed the button at the right moment!
