Public Enemy
16th May 1988, Birmingham, UK
Artwork Title: Public Enemy - 1988 - S1W
The S1W move right into the foreground here, with the rest of Public Enemy lined up behind them. I deliberately positioned them like this to look like a military procession, the band members falling in line behind the S1W.
The S1W were Public Enemy's Security of the First World and the military styling was already a very deliberate part of the group's presentation. It makes for a slightly strange photograph when you're standing behind the camera with two very serious-looking men in uniform coming towards you.
Then again, I had already spent the previous night discussing politics and revolution with Chuck D, so perhaps I should have expected the morning to continue in much the same vein.
Fun Fact: The star and crescent pseudo military insignia on the S1W uniforms were really tin foil stretched over bits of cardboard. I guess they hadn’t been given a wardrobe budget yet!
