Public Enemy
16th May 1988, Birmingham, UK
Artwork Title: Public Enemy - 1988 - Chuck D and Flavor Flav
Chuck D and Flavor Flav, with the S1W loitering with intent behind them. The military-style clothing was already very much part of the Public Enemy look by this point, counterpointed by Flav’s oversized clock (the court jester of the outfit).
This was the morning after Public Enemy had played the Hummingbird in Birmingham. They were in Britain on one of their early UK visits and It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back was still more than a month away from its release.
What I remember more clearly than any of that is the previous night's conversation with Chuck D, which went on rather longer than it should have done. It was an interesting night. The next morning's five-minute lateness was less well received.
