Kurt wasn't exactly a conventional frontman.

At one point during the show he ended up rolling around on the floor while still playing guitar, which was one of those moments that made standing at the side of the stage particularly worthwhile. I could see the performance from close enough to react to what was happening without having to fight my way through an audience.

I'd already spent the day photographing the band in the East Village, and this was the first of three shows I was going to photograph over the next few days. I was still conserving film, so I wasn't photographing every movement. I was waiting for things that felt worth shooting.

This one did.
