Nirvana
3rd July 1992 Parque del Retiro, Madrid
Artwork Title: Nirvana – Parque del Retiro – Madrid 1992 - Colonnade 1
By the summer of 1992 Nirvana had become the biggest band in the world and the atmosphere around them had changed beyond recognition from the group I'd travelled with just two years earlier.
This portrait was photographed beside the Monument to Alfonso XII in Madrid's Parque del Retiro before their concert that evening. Kurt Cobain's familiar oversized glasses without their lenses and his Daniel Johnston Hi, How Are You T-shirt have since become closely associated with this period, although at the time they were simply part of another day's shoot.
It wasn't the easiest of photo sessions and, if I'm honest, I came away rather disappointed. Thirty-odd years later I've made my peace with that. The circumstances may not have been ideal, but the photograph has endured rather better than my memories of the afternoon.
