Metallica
4th February 1989 – Sam Houston Coliseum, Houston, Texas
Artwork Title: Metallica- Houston 1989 - Up Against The Wall
This was taken backstage at the enormous Houston Coliseum before Metallica went on stage, part of a shoot for Sounds magazine.
I had maybe twenty minutes to photograph the band and, because it was already dark outside, there was no chance of finding an interesting outdoor location. So this was what I had: a bare wall, a tiled floor and four members of Metallica.
These were often the conditions you worked under as a music-paper photographer. There wasn't a studio waiting for you, and nobody was going to spend an afternoon building a set. You found somewhere that worked, made the best of it and got the pictures before someone came looking for the band.
Looking at it now, I rather like the fact that there is nothing particularly glamorous about the location.
You can’t see that this was in an arena, this could be a photograph taken anywhere against a wall but above our heads 10,000 Metallica fans were waiting for the band to come out and rock their asses off.
