Artwork Title: U2 - Full Band Live - B Stage

This is what I believe is called, in showbiz terms, The B-Stage, the catwalk out into the audience at an arena show.

Photographed midway through the third date of the Zoo TV Tour, this is one of my favourite frames because all four members are caught together in a rare moment of interaction, surrounded by the audience and the theatrical darkness of the arena.

The B-stage was a new feature for U2, extending from the enormous main stage into the crowd and allowing the band to suddenly strip away some of the distance created by Zoo TV's overwhelming multimedia production.

Here Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. are all engaged with each other, giving the picture a sense of movement and spontaneity that was quite different from the spectacle unfolding behind them.

Zoo TV would become one of the defining tours of the early 1990s, but from the B-stage it could feel surprisingly intimate — four musicians playing in the middle of the audience using acoustic instruments. It looks surprisingly simple but was actually a major technological challenge only made possible by the development of In-Ear Monitors allowing the performers freedom of movement whilst still being able to hear themselves and their bandmates.
