By this point The Cranberries were returning with Bury the Hatchet, released in April 1999 after a period away from the spotlight and Dolores appeared noticeably removed from the image she had become known for during the band’s early success. The intense, almost painted quality of this portrait comes from cross-processing transparency film in negative chemicals, producing the exaggerated colour and hard contrast that suited her striking new look.

There’s something deliberately confrontational in the combination of the vivid blue coat, red patterned shirt, heavy eyeliner and bleached blonde hair — a long way from the barefoot, tousled-haired figure associated with Linger.

Although I don’t remember where I shot this I’m guessing it was in a hotel room somewhere as I have my makeshift velveteen backdrop behind which matches perfectly with Dolores red and blue print shirt.
