Jarvis Cocker - Pulp
17th July 1995 The Roof of Townhouse Studios, London W6
Artwork Title: Jarvis Cocker - Pulp - V Sign - Colour
A recently unearthed colour transparency of the classic BW shot of Jarv having the nation out.
This was for an NME piece on favourite films.
Jarvis, being the grim Northern lad that he is, chose ‘Kes’ by Barry Hines, set in his hometown of Sheffield.
The poster of the film has the young star flicking a V sign at the camera in grainy black & white so this was my homage to that image.
What I didn't know was that 6 months later at the Brits, Jarvis would flick V signs at Michael Jackson live on TV.
Maybe this shoot inspired him!
note to overseas readers (ie: non-Brits) the V sign with the hand facing back towards the face is the Brit equivalent of the middle finger, a very strong F.U., a ‘come and have a go if you think you’re hard enough’ invitation.
