For a moment the choreography seems to disappear and he looks almost alone on the stage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThat was one of the advantages of being right at the front of the stage. I wasn't trying to photograph the spectacle of Wembley itself; I was looking for the moments when the performer became the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe huge belt and elaborate costume are still there, of course, but the expression is much simpler. His eyes are half-closed, one arm disappears out of the frame and the rest of the stage falls away into darkness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eIt is a quieter photograph than some of the others from this roll.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eWith Michael Jackson, there was always a lot happening. It isn't a big gesture or one of the obvious Jackson poses. He is simply moving through the performance, caught between one moment and the next.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe contact sheet (you can find it in the M.J. collection on this site)\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003eshows how many small variations there were within the show and the frames I shot.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eA fraction of a second either way and the balance of the body, hands and face changes completely.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThat was the reality of shooting from the pit in those days. The finished print gives you one moment; the sheet gives you the dozen or so decisions surrounding it. The white jumpsuit dominates the frame, the black straps break it up graphically and the raised arm takes Michael almost out of the picture altogether.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI was shooting black and white Ilford HP5, pushed two stops in the processing which gave me plenty of latitude for the constantly changing stage lighting but also left a fairly pronounced grain structure in the darker areas and blown out whites.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eLooking back at the contact sheet, there are several almost identical moments here, but they aren't really identical at all. By the time I get to the later frames, there is very little stage left in the photographs at all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe contact sheet also shows something that is normally invisible once a photograph has been turned into a print: the selection process. You can see the near-identical frames sitting next to one another and, in the middle of the roll, the marked frame 16 that eventually became the photograph with the rather unlikely Kevin Cummins story.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThat is one of the reasons I like keeping the contact sheets.
